How can hydrolysis occur?
Salt hydrolysis only occurs IF one or both of the components of the salt are weak acids and or weak bases. If the salt component is strong acid and strong base, then the ion component of the strong acid or strong base will not be hydrolyzed.

Reaction of salt with water, where the salt component (cation or anion) derived from weak acids or weak bases reacts with water to form H3O + ions (= H +) or OH- ions.
If hydrolysis produces H3O + then the solution is acidic, but if hydrolysis produces OH ions - then the solution is basic.

The nature of salt depends on the type of acidic component and its base. Salt can be formed from strong acids with strong bases, weak acids with strong bases, strong acids with weak bases, or weak acids with weak bases.
Thus, the acid-base properties of a salt can be determined from the strength of the acid and its constituent bases. The acidity or alkalinity of the salt is caused by some of the salt dissolving reacting with water. The process of dissolving some of the salt reacts with water is called hydrolysis (hydro which means water and lysis which means decomposition).
